Job Description:

The goal of WHO’s presence in countries, territories and areas is to develop a two-way collaboration between the Secretariat and countries, territories and areas, by supporting them to reach national health goals and contribute to global and regional public health action. WHO utilizes the Country Cooperation Strategy (CCS), a key element of the Country Focus strategy, as a strategic management tool to create synergy and alignment between WHO leadership priorities and national health policies, strategies and plans as well as United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). Creating this synergy and alignment will be essential to advance WHO’s organizational effectiveness and ensure WHO’s relevance at country level.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Support in the smooth working of the sentinel sites of CRS, Rota, IBD, XDR Typhoid, through technical support and ensuring logistic supplies.
  • Liaise with national counterparts, technical departments at EMRO and with donors and development partners (UN and bilateral) to harmonize implementation activities related to vaccine-preventable diseases.
  • Collaborate with Provincial technical staff to secure sources of information and support in the development of surveillance improvement plans medium-term and long-term.
  • Coordinate for Integration of AFP Surveillance system and other notifiable diseases (like SARI/ILI) with National VPD
  • Surveillance system. Develop operational plan for continuing AFP surveillance and other notifiable diseases surveillance integration into the national VPD surveillance system to make one comprehensive Integrated Diseases Surveillance and Response System.
  • Work with relevant institutions and partners to develop/adapt training materials and to implement trainings on surveillance, investigation, reporting and response.
  • Evaluate the surveillance system in reference to the objectives to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Provide technical advice and communicate national and regional guidance to counterparts in the provinces for strengthening of VPD and AEFI surveillance.
  • Update AEFI Surveillance Guidelines and coordinate with provinces for planning capacity building on AEFI.
  • Serve as a technical resource to the programme concerning outbreak investigation and response following SOPs.
  • Conduct disease-specific risk assessments in Coordination with Federal and Provincial EPI Programmes.
  • Support the strengthening of Lab based disease surveillance network like Measles/rubella, Rota, Pneumonia and Invasive Bacterial Diseases (IBD) and Extensive Drug Resistance (XDR) Typhoid and Congenital Rubella syndrome (CRS).
  • Develop and/or adapt Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) for disease surveillance, case investigation, reporting and response.

Job Requirements:

  • Synthesizing information and presenting clear and concise conclusions and recommendations for decision making
  • Good communication skills both written and oral, and ability to write in a clear ,concise and effective manner for different audiences.
  • Ability to analyze epidemiological data and detect trends, unusual occurrences, outbreaks and other possible adverse public health events.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of disease surveillance, epidemiology, risk assessment, emergency response and disease control.

Qualification & Experience:

  • University degree in medicine or health related field.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in public health programmes in the areas of disease surveillance, vaccine preventable disease control, and immunization, at national and/or international levels.
